It is good to be prepared. Luck is said to be preparedness meeting opportunity. Thus, if we try to do our best we “make a plan”.
Planning promotes thinking in logical consequences. Often however, plans do not survive their first contacts with reality.
Whenever assumptions about future circumstances do not harmonise with reality, resources are strained or wasted.
Improvisation promotes instead a continuous scrutiny of reality. We probe, rather than drive. Unburdened by assumptions we get fewer shocking surprises.
We may however end up in places where we did not want to go, because we prioritize immediate gain or least resistance.
Strategy uses the best of both. Rather than executing predetermined steps based on fictional reality (planning) or being led astray by the scent of random opportunities (improvisation), strategy focuses on essential intent and on choices to be made when facing crucial realities.
