Are beliefs irrational?

Belief is confidence in the truth or existence of something without immediate proof.

Sometimes we view beliefs with mild disdain. But beliefs may not be so irrational after all. Rather than wishful thinking or superstition, beliefs are multiple observations or multiple reinforced perception. Even if unreflected, it is based on perception.

AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) is able to create a belief in alcoholics that it is possible for them to stop drinking. When would an alcoholic have the belief? When he has seen enough people not too dissimilar to him to have managed to stop.

What is “right” and “wrong” regarding beliefs? What happens if the alcoholic despite his belief fails to stop drinking? Was his belief wrong ?
