Is the the truth “somewhere in the middle” between contending views?
Yes. Somewhere! Like in the middle of nowhere.
Whenever we use “somewhere in the middle” we either try to mediate between zealots or are in no mood to look closer.
The best thing that can be said about “truth is in the middle”: it tones down our most naive meddling impulses. In terms of cognitive value it is rather useless.
